Bird Patrol Adventure Update
Hi Birding Pals,
Thank you to those of you who participated in the Bird Patrol-led Bird Tour on July 6th. It is reassuring to know that so many people appreciate the fabulous birds of Lakes Park. The park is truly a treasure in Lee County for wildlife. Your interest and support will help keep it that way.
Thank you to Bird Patrol guides Vince McGrath, Jose Padilla and Meg Rousher for sharing their expertise, time and knowledge with us.
Below is a list of the species seen during the walk. Thank you, Meg, for keeping track of all of it. To learn more about each species, scroll to the bottom of the list where it says View this checklist online. Click on the link to eBird. When the list appears, click the bird you would like and more information will appear about that species.
We hope to see you on future walks. Mark your calendar for the first Saturday of every month, starting at 8AM at Shelter A7. Expert Walt Winton will be the guide on Saturday, August 3, for the next Lakes Park Bird Walk.
See you there!
Good Birding.

REMINDER
Story Time will resume in October 2024
Community Garden
Dear Gardeners,
Your steering committee is hard at work getting ready for the new season, taking care of the garden and making sure we are prepared for any storms.
The committee is going to sell plants and have soil delivered to the garden in October. Seeds will be planted in August and hopefully be ready for sale. You can expect kale, varieties of tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, black and white eggplant, parsley, Swiss chard. and garlic chives. Plants will be for sale at a nominal price and all proceeds go back into the park. If you have any suggestions for plants or ideas, we'd like to hear from you.
Hurricane season has begun and we need to be prepared. The Steering Committee would like everyone to have their beds ready. Please take tomato cages home or tie them down. If they are lying in your garden, the committee will add them to the "garden supply" located in a secure area. Please look at the objects that are in your bed. If it's not staked down, it can become a danger. These items will be stored or trashed at the discretion of the steering members. If you have something valuable or important to you, take it out now. Thank you for taking care of this matter. It is very important!
Volunteers
We are always in need of helpers. Thanks to all who give their time and energy to make the garden run smoothly. We need helpers on Mondays and Thursdays to create concrete forms for the new beds. No experience is needed. This group will begin in October so even Snowbirds can help. If you can volunteer in the morning on one of these days, please email Dan at dan@dflavin.com. Remember, you can receive a free parking pass if you volunteer for just 40 hours. Of course, you can earn hours doing other things as well. Any time you help in the garden is a volunteer hour. It takes a community to keep the garden beautiful.
Renewals will be coming.
September 30th is the deadline to renew your bed. On October 1st, any bed that has not been renewed will be posted for new members to rent and become gardeners. Contracts will go out by email at the end of August and need to be electronically signed, paid for and returned. Please check your SPAM folder during this time. If you are not renewing your bed or are having trouble with your renewals, please email Connie at conniespeck@lakespark.org
Summer Gardens
This is a reminder that if you are continuing to work your garden over the summer and did not "put it to sleep", or give it to Dave to plant sweet potatoes, you still need to maintain your bed. Beds cannot be left to be overgrown, weedy, and ignored. We are a reflection of the Lakes Park Community and need to keep our gardens looking fresh and maintained. Don't forget to trim the 6-inch border around your bed. It is easier if you wet the area first and then pull the weeds. And while you are weeding around the bed, pull the ones inside too. Don't let it get out of hand.
Watering
It is the rainy season and we have been blessed with rain almost every day. We have made posts that say "Water Me". These posts are for gardeners to use when they are out of town and need help from fellow gardeners. If you see this pink sign in a bed, please help them and water if needed. These posts are not supposed to be a permanent structure in your garden. If you cannot take the time to water and tend your bed reasonably, maybe it is time to give up the bed.
It has been a hot and humid summer. I am looking forward to cooler weather. The Community Garden is quiet but still a nice place to be in the morning before it gets steamy. In a few months, it will be busy and flourishing again. I can't wait to start planting again. I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. Please let me know if there is anything you need or suggestions you might have to make the garden an even more wonderful place.
