Lakes Park Garden History
Oct. 30, 1994
- The Fragrance Garden opened and had a strong appeal to the visually impaired. The multitude of flower scents – chocolate, Surinam cherry, marl berry, parsley, sage and thyme – attracted butterflies and hummingbirds. Additionally, Memory
Lane was added. This was achieved by monetary donations which dedicated trees, shrubs, plants or benches to the
memory of loved ones that were designated by plaques. The garden was entered through a 170 foot arbored walkway draped with flowering and fruiting vines. Another Garden entrance had lanes with 56 wheelchair height planters, each labeled with the
plant growing within it. The labels were in print and Braille. Ed and Sylvia Blue and numerous volunteers were instrumental in the Fragrance Garden’s concept and construction.
