Hurricane Irma recovery efforts for February 2018

Published on February 13, 2018 by Erin White

Fragrance Garden: Hurricane Irma recovery efforts for February 2018

Hurricane Irma may have kicked the Fragrance Garden hard, but we’re coming back with renewed enthusiasm and purpose!  Now that “season” is in full swing, we have lots of snowbird volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to help put the pieces back together again.

Early in February, the Fragrance Garden team planted a red powder puff and a “Little Gem” magnolia to help replace what was lost.  We also recently visited the “garden market” at the Edison Ford Estates to purchase replacements for plants that were crushed or waterlogged during the hurricane.

YOU CAN HELP!

Public generosity has gotten us this far on the long road toward recovery. Here ‘s how you can help –

DID YOU KNOW?

  • An adult tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year.

  • Lakes Park lost around 300 trees to the storm.

  • Thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide are placing a burden on the remaining trees, degrading our air quality.

  • Animals and people lost habitat, food, and shade.

  • It can cost up to $500 to replace a tree, depending on the size.

Help Lakes Park in Fort Myers recover from Hurricane IrmaThe Foundation’s purpose is to partner with the County to improve the park. We have a campaign on GoFundMe that is dedicated to collecting funds for the purpose of recovering from Hurricane Irma. It’s going to be a long journey, one that will not happen overnight.

To help the Fragrance Garden restoration efforts, please visit our GoFundMe page. No amount is too small to be useful or appreciated!
