Gartner Day of Caring energizes volunteers in Lakes Park’s Botanic Garden

Gartner Day of Caring energizes volunteers in Lakes Park’s Botanic Garden

On November 2nd, the United Way sent a team of volunteers from the Gartner Group to help Foundation volunteers in the Botanic Garden at Lakes Park. Dubbed a “Day of Caring”, the United Way describes this service event as follows:

United Way Day of Caring“The United Way Day of Caring celebrates volunteerism throughout Lee County by bringing together teams from local businesses, schools, churches, civic groups, and families to complete projects and make significant impact on the nonprofit community. This event is a remarkable team builder for groups and allows volunteers to see firsthand the great work accomplished by the nonprofits in Lee County.”

Volunteers from Gartner expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of spending time outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine. Supervised by Ross Becker, Parks & Rec Program Specialist, volunteers spread mulch, removed/whacked weeds in and around garden beds, trimmed shrubbery, and generally spruced up the gardens at Lakes Park. They were joined in the Children’s Garden by Foundation Board Member Peggy Bruhn.  Nancy Sanders and Linda Sapp from the Community Garden leadership team were on hand. Jim Convey snapped photos of the event – see gallery, below.

Working together

Kathy Busick, Foundation Secretary and long-time leader of the Fragrance Garden volunteers, declared, “It was wonderful to see Lakes Park’s volunteers working with Gartner volunteers. The enthusiasm and spirit of working together as a community cannot be measured.”

“I believe that everyone walked away feeling dirty and tired, but excited about having helped to spruce up such an amazing park”, Busick continued. “I also believe we introduced many of them to the wonders of Lakes Park…many didn’t know it existed but promised to return on another day to enjoy all it has to offer.”
